Local boy participates in state sport fishing event | Local news

The State of Missouri Extension 2020 4-H Sport Fishing Event was held virtually June 19-21 with over 90 4-H youths registered.

4-H members practiced their angling skills in local public fishing areas in a derby to catch the bigger fish. They also tested their knowledge of species and equipment identification, aquatic ecosystems and fish anatomy in the sport fishing skills competition.

As a result of their experiences in 4-H, young people said they wanted to learn more about natural resources and see 4-H as a place to gain this knowledge and enjoy activities related to natural resources. They also said they are able to describe the importance of aquatic ecosystems and identify the equipment and techniques used in sport fishing. On a more general level, young people said they enjoyed learning new things, were willing to work hard on something difficult, set goals for themselves and showed respect for the ideas of others.

Young people were divided into three categories based on their age.

The winners of the junior derby (8-10 years old) include 1st place Christopher Boschert – St. Charles County and Henry Stark – Cooper County as a finalist. Junior Skill-a-thon winners include Luke Manson – Chariton County and Trevin Manson – Chariton County as a finalist.
