ODFW Announces Updates on Pacific Halibut Sport Fishing Season Openings | News

The 2022 Pacific Halibut Sport Seasons and Regulations were recently adopted by the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission:

Columbia River Subareas (Leadbetter Pt., WA to Cape Falcon, OR):

Coastal Season: Open Monday to Wednesday from May 9 inside the 40 fathom line until the 500-pound quota is reached or until September 30.

Full depth season: Open every Thursday and Sunday, from May 5 to 26. If the quota of 18,537 pounds is not reached, the fishery will open every Thursday and Sunday from June 2 to 30. If the quota remains, ODFW will coordinate with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to determine additional openings.

Central Coast Subsector (Cape Falcon to Mount Humbug):

Coastal Season: Open daily from May 1 inside the 40 fathom line until the quota (32,808 pounds) is reached or until October 31.

Full-depth spring season: open daily from May 12 to June 30. If any of the 169,963 allowances remain, the reserve dates are July 7-9 and July 21-23. Previously, this fishery was only open from Thursday to Sunday; this year’s daily schedule gives anglers more opportunities to harvest a halibut.

All-depth summer season: Open August 4-6 and every other Thursday, Friday and Saturday until the 67,445-pound quota is reached or October 31

Southern Oregon Sub-Zone (Humbug Mountain to OR/CA border): Open daily from May 1 until 8,000 pound quota is reached or until October 31.

Pacific halibut anglers must have a lowering device on board the boat and use it to release any species of rockfish when fishing at 30 fathoms or deeper.

Anglers must immediately tag their harvested fish.

Anglers can keep one Pacific halibut a day, six a year.

The Stonewall Bank Yelloweye Rockfish Conservation Area (YRCA), located in the Central Coast sub-area, is closed to Pacific halibut fishing.

Anglers on vessels with Pacific halibut or groundfish are prohibited from fishing in the Stonewall Bank YRCA, even when targeting legal species (salmon and tuna).

Reminder: important permanent regulations from 2021:

In May, June, September and October:

Groundfish may be combined with All Depth Pacific Halibut on All Depth Halibut Open Days.

Rig fishing cannot be combined with halibut fishing at all depths.

Only sablefish, pacific cod and other flatfish species (no other groundfish species) may be combined with halibut at all depths except for trawling as noted below.

The trip can be combined with offshore longline fishing provided:

Longline fishing must take place outside 40 fathoms

Once the rockfish are on board, no more halibut fishing is permitted.
